the role of a designer

These first few weeks in the MID program have been intense - and intense with cliches. We’ve hit the ground running and it’s full steam ahead. As an aerospace engineer, I can solve physics equations from here till kingdom come. Yet, I've learned that even these tools can’t completely illuminate the unstructured design process. As a philosopher, I've probably been trying too hard to figure out my role as a designer. This had been the task of one my classes, to map the role of a designer from our own perspective. After several hours of pacing in circles and writing on napkins and post-its, the colors finally made a little sense.

Role of a Design - Ben F

I'm not claiming this is the right view, it's just one view. It has led me to hypothesize that the designer's environment dictates the designer's role. This view has been developed only over the past few weeks, and it's bound to change and evolve as I absorb more ideas, tools, and experiences.
