The Action Mill - Creating Meaningful Action
On Monday, Jethro and Rob from The Action Mill came to speak to the 1st and 2nd year MID students about creating meaningful action, which they defined as “Instead of saying what you want, you do what you want.” The Action Mill is an organization that seeks to help their clients gain and keep people’s attention by several means, including designing tools like telephones and ballot boxes as well as organizing people to act and promote change.
They charged us with transforming the way in which people engage with the world through our group studio projects. As designers, we must coordinate the desires of our clients with our way of observing and understanding the world. It is fairly easy to identify problems, but the true challenge is to design something new and more effective than existing tools and actions. Jethro and Rob asked us to look to the iterative nature of the OODA-loop in our design process. Over the next few weeks, our studio design teams are to observe, orient, decide(design), and act.
The Action Mill is returning to MID in two weeks to see how we have engaged more deeply with the stakeholders of our studio projects and to continue to push us to meaningful action.
