The Good Day Door Goes Public
One of the projects that came out of this year's Charrette was the Good Day Door. It was a doorway, or threshold, labeled "Good Day Door" and installed on the sidewalk on 15th between Walnut and Sansom street. The idea was that it would afford passing pedestrians the option to take action towards a good day. It was well-received by the community. Many took pictures with it, some walked through it multiple times, kissed their hands and touched it, even forming a line to pass through it at times. It wasn't just people passing by that appreciated it either. The nearby store owner would cheer as people passed through.
The doorway was created with the understanding that people strive for balance in their lives; whether it's with work and play, personal and social time or even pain and joy. The project team decided to focus on the latter of these and try to help people overcome the pain of a bad day.
Besides balance the team focused on the element of air, or space. They realized that many times bad days are perpetuated because the mind focuses on them and it is difficult to overcome this. To attack this problem most simply, people could take a single action towards a better day and thus the Good Day Door was born. The hope was that the simple action of walking through a doorway, an action we all do everyday, could help people improve their day. There were no buzzers, no lasers, no confetti or fireworks, just air and hope.
That was the beauty of it, the benefit relied solely on the participants' openness to the idea so that even people that just passed by would get a smile on their face from it.
